Dear Friend,

I'm writing this to you from the maternity ward. I'm posted up in the bathroom, of all places. The earth angel——aka, my wife——is resting with my baby boy Fitzy just outside.

As I was thinking about this email, I was holding my son in my arms. I sat there staring at him for thirty-five minutes as my wife napped. My right hand was numb, but I didn't dare move it. Staring at my son who, is a teeny-tiny peanut right now, I found myself almost tearing up at just how incredible life is.

Our birthing experience was abrupt, powerful, gentle, graceful, and fierce——all mashed up into one incredible memory. My wife is a trooper. She has more pain tolerance than I do. (I talk a big game, but I can sometimes be a complete mangina.)

Anyway, my wife is one of those people who silently presses on and marches forth. Here's something you'll learn if you ever have a child:

It can be frustrating, but let them do their job. These nurses are warriors and soldiers who should be commended. I can't imagine how many times they're yelled at by sleep-deprived men and women.

I'll be honest. Last night, my wife and I hit a breaking point——a benevolent one, I suppose. The thought "I give up" crossed my mind several times as Fitzy cried and cried and cried. I felt hapless and overwhelmed. Thankfully, a nurse came to our rescue, rocking Fitzy to sleep and giving my wife a much-needed hour of rest.

Every hour offers a new bit of joy and a new challenge. We just overcame the challenge of figuring out how to get Fitzy to breastfeed. Pro tip: Nipple guards are quite useful. That's all I'm going to say on that matter.
