On Lions

Dear Friend,

I am writing today to tell you about a video I saw yesterday featuring a lion. I want to tell you about this lion because I believe it illustrates one of the most powerful "boosts" you can give yourself if you want to make it as an independent writer, creator, thinker, solopreneur.

I'm sitting on my couch with little Fitzy——my newborn son——finally asleep in his bassinet, and I'm scrolling through YouTube. That's when I stumble upon this video. It starts with this massive lion surveying his territory. But then a pack of about 20 hyenas appears.

Now, I've always thought of hyenas as these laughing, scavenging goofballs. But let me tell you, in a pack, they're terrifying. They start circling the lion—— darting in and out——nipping at his heels.

The lion fights back. He's the king of the jungle, after all. But he's surrounded, outnumbered. As the battle goes on, he gets tired, bloodied. It looks like it's only a matter of time before the hyenas take him down.

But Then, Something Incredible Happens.

A second lion appears on the scene. And just like that, the whole dynamic shifts. The hyenas become more hesitant. They can't attack from behind because now the lions have each other's backs. What was once a losing battle suddenly becomes winnable.

As I watched this, it hit me. This is exactly what it's like for most writers and creators out there. You see, most of us start our journey alone. We're that solitary lion——facing a world full of challenges. And while we might not be literally fighting off hyenas, we're battling something just as fierce——self-doubt, uncertainty, the constant pressure to "play it safe." Think about it. How many times have you sat down to write, only to hear that nagging voice in your head?

"Who do you think you are?"

"Nobody's going to read this."

"You should just get a real job."

Or maybe it's not just your inner voice. Maybe it's the subtle (or not so subtle) digs from friends and family:

"Oh, you're still doing that writing thing?"

"When are you going to get a stable job?"

"I saw a position open at [insert soul-crushing corporate job here]. You should apply!"

And so on.

It's exhausting. Fighting off these doubts day after day——trying to believe in yourself when it feels like the whole world is telling you to give up.
